pedagogical aspects

Draft version!
Author: Jean-Pierre Redonnet

Solving the technological difficulties is not enough. The most important aspect is pedagogical. It is certain that the wiki is a wonderful tool for the collaborative and constructivism learning. But it is not enough! We will have to:

Incite the students to contribute to the wiki

What factors will motivate the students to contribute to the wiki?

  • The grade. Grading the contributions will certainly push the students to contribute to the wiki. We can imagine two kinds of contribution:
    • Forced contribution. It could be in form of homework assignment where students have to create of update a topic.
    • Spontaneous contribution. Any student can decide to edit a page for instant. The agreement of the instructor may be required.
  • The notoriety and satisfaction. The fact the pages created by the students will be used in class as teaching material, and the name of the students will appear next to their contributions will certainly motivate them to contribute seriously.
  • The pleasure to learn what they want and need to learn. They have the possibility to introduce new topics to the course and to develop them with the help of the instructor.

Because the wiki will provide the teaching materials used in class, it is important to assure the quality of the pages. Many factors have to be considered:

  1. The instructional design.
  2. The learning objectives.
  3. The learning activities.
  4. The accuracy of the informations.
  5. The quality of the texts (structure, style, syntax, vocabulary, grammar).
  6. The references to the bibliography.
  7. The measure of the outcomes.
  8. The design of the pages.

Help the students to create their own course

A lot of competencies will be required, and it will be unrealistic to believe students can do all this work alone. It is there that the instructor will play an important role. He will have many possibilities that will be combined together, such as:

  • to provide the outline of the course.
  • to provide some course templates.
  • to define the learning objectives.
  • to advice the students concerning the instructional design.
  • to check the accuracy of the informations and the references.
  • to verify the quality of the texts.
  • to advice about the outcomes to measure.

Probably the first years, the whole course will not be good enough to be used without the support of a textbook. But we can predict that over time, the cumulative contributions and corrections will make the online course as good as a any textbook.

Motivate the instructors to support the wiki project

The instructors are the engine of the wiki project. They will guide and encourage students to invest a part of their energy in the elaboration of their courses. It is important to make their job easier, one possibility is to provide many course templates and illustration resource. We can create a forum where they will share their experiences and a files repository where their share their own templates and other creations.

Explain how to design efficient multimedia eLearning courses

Converging texts, images, video, graphics, and audio into an efficient multimedia course requires a real expertise. Because the instructors and students will need the advices of experts in multimedia and eLearning, we will have to include a specialist in multimedia and eLearning in our team.
